Our History

Our Credit Union began in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1954 as Sheetmetal Local #45 Credit Union.

As we grew, we began to serve not only the Sheetmetal Local #45 but ALL the Des Moines area trade unions and their families with membership opportunities. Soon we extended membership opportunities to all local union contractors, their employees, and families as well. In May 1956 the Des Moines Building Trades Council approved Sheetmetal Local #45 Credit Union to extend membership to all workers of the Steamfitter’s, Plumber’s, Ironworker’s, Painter’s, and Brick Layer’s Union.

On March 19, 1976 we officially changed our name to Tradesmen Credit Union, to better reflect all our members.  Now offering membership to all labor unions, we outgrew our office located in at the Sheetmetal Local #45 Union hall. In the spring of 1983 we began construction on our main office. Over 2,600 members volunteered to help build a better space for their credit union, making us one of the only credit unions truly built by its members.  Finally in the spring of 1984 we opened our doors to the main office at 1400 2nd Ave.  in Des Moines.

In 1993, Tradesmen Credit Union merged with Electricians Local #347 Credit Union, which significantly increased our membership. With the growth in membership we decided to expand, which lead to the purchase of our branch office. In 1994, remodeling was complete and we opened our doors at 2930 SE 14th St. in Des Moines. To continue our growth and maintain our competitive edge, in September of 2000 our Board of Directors and membership voted to finalize our application for a community charter and formally change our name to Tradesmen Community Credit Union (TCCU). This important step expanded our membership eligibility to include anyone who lives or working in Polk County and its seven surrounding counties.

After many years of serving our members associated with the trades and the community as a whole, the members asked us to create a more inclusive name and image that was inviting to anyone eligible to do business with us.  So, July 1st, 2019 our name changed to Journey Credit Union.   We built our rock-solid foundation with the hard-working men and women of the local trade unions. With our community charter we continue to build on that foundation for our community.  Journey Credit Union is a full-service financial institution whose members rely on to meet all their financial needs. As we continue to grow, we strive to help you on your road to financial success!
